[Blog] Why Has Supporting The Blues Become So Confusing?
Written by themightybutch on Sunday, 29th Jan 2012 10:54

As an Ipswich Town fan of 35 years, I’ve never felt as confused as I have done under the Marcus Evans regime.

Looking back, it started as soon as he walked into the club. I was a fan of Jim Magilton. No, I loved Jim Magilton. His passion and desire to see Town succeed endeared him to most. His short tenure as manager now looks to be a success and if I could turn back the clock, I would love to see what JM could have achieved.

However, exciting times were around the corner and in Marcus Evans we trusted. Swayed by the euphoria and national TV coverage Town got as a result of appointing Roy Keane, I sort of dismissed the incredibly negative forum posts from Sunderland fans as bitterness and jealousy. Sorry Sunderland fans. Hands up – you were right.

The thing is, I was a fan of Roy Keane. No, I loved Roy Keane. He was just the type of passionate player I had tried to be as a kid playing for my local team. Then he’d gone and got Sunderland promoted.

We were onto a dead cert. ME’s millions, RK’s winning mentality. Promotion was a reality, play-offs were a certainty! I so wanted RK to succeed. I was definitely one of his inners until close to the end, when it was clear his man management abilities were causing problems in the dressing room.

I was saddened when Roy Keane was sacked. I really admired his ability as a player and hoped it would carry on into his management at Town. Never mind, it was time to move on and in Marcus Evans we trusted.

There were rumours floating around that Paul Jewell was to be appointed as Roy Keane’s successor. Like most fans, I’d seen what he’d done at Bradford, Wigan, Sheffield Wednesday and Derby. His compromising headline picture in the News of the World came to mind and I’d seen him as a pundit on Sky Sports. So I had mixed feelings at this point. Then, he was appointed and said everything us fans wanted to hear.

Exciting times were around the corner and with ME’s millions the forum posts were amassing with names of players that PJ could attract to Town.

The summer was exciting. Jimmy Bullard, Michael Chopra, Aaron Cresswell, JET etc, etc. The arrival of big names and exciting players seemed constant. Promotion was a reality, play-offs were a certainty. Once again as the new season beckoned, pundits were calling Town promotion hopefuls. Not just play-offs – that was a certainty – but promotion.

Then the season started and yet again it's over by Christmas. Why have the big summer signings not performed?

When PJ speaks he makes everything okay, like your mum does. The difference is, your mum is usually right and sorts out the problem. I so want Paul Jewell to succeed for a couple of reasons. We can’t keep changing our manager. As much as I’ve wanted something different recently, by the time a new manager brings in his players and implements his ideas do we write-off next season?

PJ talks a good game. If he can get these ideas on the pitch (and sort out our dire defence), I’m sure he’ll bring success to ITFC.

Are Town fans unlucky? Are we cursed? Shouldn’t we be in the Premiership by now? Why can’t money buy us success? Isn’t this what we thought/hoped was going to happen?

We’ve just signed Ryan Stevenson for £50,000. I’m happy with that. Let’s get in the players that will grasp their chance of playing for Town and be proud to wear the blue shirt. I think PJ may have learnt his lesson and will bring in footballers that give 100% every week. Provided some of them are decent defenders, I think next season could be our year.

In Marcus Evans I trust. Surely his investment will pay off sooner or later?

I would rather have a team costing little, full of players who are want to play for us than a team full of players like Bowyer who are only here to see out their career

Some very good points there. Even if Jewell doesn't get us up next season, I won't mind, so long as there are good signs of progress being made.

Enjoyed reading your thoughts buddy , but Im not sure why your confused ,it all seems extremely clear to me .
To cover your points ,firstly with Jim leaving .
Have we all forgot his last game ,with the help of Dos Santos ,turning over the Budgies ? How things have changed .
We must remember also ,for all you 'Jim Bashers,' that he was a novice ,a bloke starting out learning his new trade .He was entitled to make a few errors ,and for the record ,contrary to belief ,he had a decent stint at QPR also .
AND HE CARED .
With Roy Keane ,I never joined the 'Bandwagon,' never got exited and I did believe the Sunderland fans and their 'Doom-mongering.'
Furthermore I never liked him ,I detested him ,and even more so now ,and when I see the arrogant 'aris' still delivering 'drivel,' and getting paid for it as a punter on the box ,it make's my blood boil .
Unless you are 'Red,' how could anybody like a man , who treated Mick Mc'carthy ,at the World Cup ,with so much disrepect and who finished Alfie Haarland's career and then bragged about it in his book .
The Man was ,and still is ,a complete fake and a Con ,and has obviously done alright from being the latter .
Roy Keane getting the sack ,you was saddened ????????????
I was 'over the moon.' This was then the chance to get in a Man ,who was prepared to stand in the shadows of his team and let his players do the talking .
I thought the owner would learn ,maybe he has and maybe PJ will come good , but when he was appointed ,again I could not get exited .
Yes he done well with Wigan and Bradford ,but he done poorly for them also .His other exploits are best left alone .
His signings did not exite me either.
Even Chopra ,who everyone went 'Ga-Ga' over ,is just another mediocre journeyman ,JET looks like he should be playing for the 'Laker's' ,and ,yes Cresswell looks the 'best of the bunch,' but that is because the other's are so average .
Then his entourage of 'past acquantaince's' started turning up ' to form a backroom team that would be derised in the Ryman League . Their past achievements have also been well documented on this site ,which adds up to abysmal. ( Not including Mr.Osman of course .)
The release of Klug and Rhodes was criminal .
Then we have the blame for embarrassing results ,firmly landing on the players shoulders .Even when it was their fault ,a good Manager should always take the heat .
Now we have a shift in policy with the onus shifted towards Youth ,and credit to PJ for his honesty in his mistakes ,but all these these things point to a lack of direction from the offset .
We now acquire Ryan Stevenson and couldn't agree more that this was the sort of player that we should of been looking at from the start ,but ,how good is he ?
( Yes I have seen his solo goal for Ayr on You tube )
Has he been bought just to appease the Fans ?
I've read that he hasn't played for a Month ,so who's watched him ,and if we watched him previously ,why didn't we buy him then ?
Finally ,the point of waiting for 'our turn to come.'
This isn't 'Bingo.' Just by carrying on with spending foolish Money does not entitle a Footall Club success . Fortunately Evans seems to have realised this .
With the right personnel at the Helm ,with hard work ,with passion ,with understanding of the realistic goals that a Club like ours can achieve and a genuine caring for the Fans ,it can be achieved ,just look up the A140 .
I never thought the day would come when we would look to emulate the Budgies .
Can we honestly admit to having all these factors in place , or has our despair simply turned to unrealistic optimism ?
Before I'm told to back the team and leave the pessimism behind ,I hope I am proven completely wrong in my judgements and that PJ leads us to the Champions League with David Beckham playing sweeper..........but I doubt it .

Don't confused yourself! Keano was a waste of time, knew it was a wrong move when he was appointed. Part of the mess now passed down by useless keano!

Jim was more likable but he lost the dressing room, though maybe we could be playing BPL now if ME had kept faith with JM. He's famous semifinal hat-trick against Bolton will always be remembered!

PJ was given time to shore up the defense but things have instead gotten worse now! He is a journey man with rich experience and therefore the mistakes made are appalling than inexperienced RK & JM. No excuses and PJ has done poorer than his predecessors surely.

Town are currently "save" because the other 3 teams below are none better now picking up little points. If town do not buck up quickly, we'll be bottom very soon once the others start to pick up points slowly (while we continue losing home games against other relegation candidates).

Town used to be A FORTRESS during JM era and we always pride being one of the teams with highest points for home games in the league. We need to start winning the home games again to stay alive! PJ need to start working on it NOW!

Well, you've basically just told us a story we already know. Your argument is, let's have some petite nce and stick with PJ? I agree, but unless things don't improve in 4-6 games (win half, or win two in a row) I think ME will have no choice!

Hey guys (last three comments), my thoughts obviously differ from yours but that's what makes footy great. What I'm saying is that the promises, thoughts and expectations from the ME investment haven't yet materialised and I'm worried that it might not happen. It should happen but something isn't working. DurhamTownFan - why be so critical? Its a blog for christ sake!

Absolutely loving the positivity, I have a feeling Stevenson will be a find and a half! For all the optimism I can't help but think we'll be a League 1 or Championship team in 10 years time.

In Marcus Evans I certainly DO NOT trust. We haven't a clue what he looks like, let alone his agenda. Promotion and quick sale? The club owes him A LOT of money and for all we know he could decide he's had enough any moment. Then we're f**ked.

I like the tone of the blog but am once again confused by someone speaking about Keane without taking into consideration how the team actually played under his stewardship - which is all I ever cared about.

Never before have we had a manager that people wanted to stay or go because of who he was and not because of how we played.

For the record I thought that under him we played the most stultifyingly dull football it's ever been my misfortune to watch. Even when we won a game it was rarely enjoyable because the ends do not always justify the means in my opinion. I pay to watch football, not watch a scoreline on the scoreboard. If results are all that matters (not how you get them) then I could just follow Town by watching Soccer Saturday.

Anyway, rant over, it's Monday, sorry.

Anyway, I still have hope that PJ can turn it around. We play some decent football at times but are let down by a dismal defence, which PJ has to take the majority of the blame for. We're running out of time though and I do think that he won't survive the season if he doesn't turn it around soon.

Sorry but we are going nowhere fast. Since ME came into the club we have ended up in nowhere land. With Sheepshanks at the helm we had links to the footballing elite and were held as a small town family club epitomising the best of English football.
Now I get the feeling we’re an outcast club, isolated, trying to by mediocre players for cut down prices and wages. The only people moving to Ipswich are twilight players who need the extra cash before hanging up the old boots and do not really have any intent of making an effort as all they have to do is turn up.
Keane had the wrong approach, PJ seems to be out of his depth and we’re quickly becoming a new Derby County but we are now damned if we do and damned if we don’t. Sack PJ and it is musical chairs all over again, stay with him and we’re likely to be relegated which would then trigger musical chairs and possibly administration.
Ipswich has become a very negative club; there is a lack of positivity from both players and fans. We have some very good players but why PJ cannot make them perform consistently and in a way that suggests there is a plan behind the madness baffles me.

When I started to read this blog, I felt buoyed by the optimism ... then i read the comments, reality set in, and i'm depressed again!! No idea how things will pan out, but I still love my football team, and will continue to do so, whatever happens.

Whymarktonomarks: that is a lot of words. In future try keeping comments shorter than the actual blog!

As I was saying , PJ ,great bloke ,the little cheeky chappy scouser ,just the sort of bloke Town needed . Always liked PJ ,me .
JET , great buy ,watched him play for Grange Hill under 10's once , when he was only 7 foot 3 , great prospect ,always said he would come good .
As for 'Chops' ,or is that 'Chips,' what a steal , how fortunate we were to grab him for a Mil .
Up the Blues !!!

Basically, we have to work with what we've got. As for the wisdom of hiring the last 2 managers, time will tell with one. The other is now history.
Changing managers is a highly risky strategy at our level. Like him or hate him PJ will be staying. ME should at least be applauded for nailing his colours to the mast with that.
